This website champions comfort footwear, wide fit and the specific problem of finding comfortable footwear if you suffer from bunions. Below you will hopefully find some answers to commonly asked questions surrounding these issues.

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe, often erroneously described as an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the head of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). As the great toe (hallux) turns in toward the second toe (angulation) the tissues surrounding the joint may become swollen and tender.

The term is used to refer to the pathological bump on the side of the great toe joint. The bump is partly due to the swollen bursal sac and/or an osseous (bony) anomaly on the mesophalangeal joint (where the first metatarsal bone and hallux meet). The larger part of the bump is a normal part of the head of first metatarsal bone that has tilted sideways to stick out at its top.

WHAT ARE “BUNION SANDALS” AND HOW CAN THEY HELP ME?

The Fidelio Hallux sandals, sold on our site, are designed to relieve pressure upon bunions. They do this by incorporating an ingeniously cut softly padded stretchable insert, that dramatically relieves pressure upon the bunion.

So when you walk, the painful sensations of the bunion straining against the side of the leather are dramatically reduced because the cushioned padding of the insert relieves the pressure upon the bunion.

Fidelio’s stretchable insert is made from materials matching that of the upper leather, creating an elegant look while concealing the bunion.

The bunion sandals are made from soft nappa leather and provide a secure foothold. Please visit www.fidelio.at for further information.

We have countless testimonials from relieved customers who have discovered the bunion sandals and feel very satisfied that they no longer have to buy a size larger than normal to accommodate the bunion, but can finally buy a pair of shoes that fit!

WHAT IS A BUNION
(this information comes from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists website, www.feetforlife.co.uk)

What most people call a bunion is actually known as "Hallux valgus". Hallux valgus refers to the condition in which the big toe is angled excessively towards the second toe – and a bunion is a symptom of the deformity.

“In a normal foot, the big toe and the long bone that leads up to it (the first metatarsal) are in a straight line,” explains podiatric surgeon Trevor Prior. “However, Hallux valgus occurs when the long foot bone veers towards your other foot and your big toes drifts towards your second toe.”

A bunion actually refers to the bony prominence on the side of the big toe. This can also form a large sac of fluid, known as a bursa, which can then become inflamed and sore.

IS IT SERIOUS?

“Some people have massive bunions that aren’t that painful but cause difficulties with shoes, while others have relatively small bunions that are very painful,” says Trevor. However, just because you have Hallux valgus doesn’t mean you’ll get the bursa.

Pressure from the big toe joint can lead to a deformity in the joint of the second toe, pushing it toward the third toe and so on.

Likewise, if the second toe and big toe cross over, it can be difficult to walk.
